Thayne, Wyoming is the heart of Star Valley, located in the midst of three National Forests, and a short drive from National Parks and nearby resort areas with altitudes ranging from 5,600 feet to over 10,000 feet. This valley is fed by seven mountain lakes, three major rivers and numerous pure water springs, creeks and streams flowing into a twenty mile long lake. As one fellow says, "When you take a drink of water in this valley you're the first one to use it."

The lakes, rivers and streams provide premier fishing for Cutthroat trout, German Browns, Brookies, Rainbows, Mackinaw and the unappreciated Mt. White Fish . This marvelous water resource also provides for boating, water skiing, jet skiing, white water rafting and kayaking, Sail boarding and more.

The forests surrounding the valley are filled with big game, including Elk, Moose, Mule Deer, Bear, Wolves and Mountains Lions. Geese, Ducks, Sandhill Cranes, Trumpeter Swans, Grouse, Bald Eagles, Hawks, Foxes and other abundant wildlife. And can be found throughout the valley.

Near by golf courses, a tennis court, and public town parks and numerous near by campgrounds in the surrounding forests make summers mild temperatures an enjoyment for most recreational activities. However, when the sun goes down, it is a good idea to have a warm coat and some mosquito spray!


Winter sports are very popular also and includes downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, Snowshoeing and Thayne is  the home of cutter racing a World Class Winter Sport.

Winter begins in mid-November with some snow already in the higher mountains and average snow depths range from twelve inches to three feet.

Temperatures throughout the year average in the low 50's at night, (some 32 degree nights) in the 80s during the day (with occasional highs in the 90's) during the summer. Spring ranges from 32 degree to 60 degrees, winter from below zero to 40 from nighttime to daytime. Some sever cold temperatures can drop to -30 degrees for a short time.

Afton & Alpine offer close by municipal airports suitable for small private planes with 4,680 and 5,000 foot asphalt runways respectively. No fixed base operator at either; the Afton airport has VASI, runway, and beacon lights. Commercial airports within 4 hours of Thayne are in Jackson Hole, 55 miles north, 1 hr. drive time and Idaho Falls, ID, 100 miles north west, 1 hr. 45 min. drive time and Salt Lake City, UT, 150 miles south, 3.5 hour drive time.

    Thayne is a great area for family reunions, recreation and provides a marvelous environment and a relaxing rural lifestyle.
