Thayne, Wyoming is the heart of Star Valley, located in
the midst of National Forest, National Parks and nearby resort areas with
altitudes ranging from 5,600 feet to over 10,000 feet. This valley is fed
by seven mountain lakes, three major rivers and numerous pure water
springs, creeks and streams flowing into a twenty mile long lake. As one
fellow says, "When you take a drink of water in this valley you're the
first one to use it." The lakes, rivers and
streams provide premier fishing for Cutthroat trout, German Browns,
Brookies, Rainbows and Mackinaw. This marvelous water resource also
provides for boating, water skiing, jet skiing, white water rafting and
kayaking.
The forest surrounding the valley are filled with
big game, including Elk, Moose, Mule Deer, Bear, and Mountains Lions.
Geese, Ducks, Sandhill Cranes, Trumpeter Swans, Grouse, Bald Eagles,
Hawks, Foxes and other wildlife can be found throughout the valley.
Near by golf courses, a tennis court, a public town
park and numerous near by campgrounds in the surrounding forest make
summer mild temperatures an enjoyment for most recreational preferences.
Winter sports are very popular also and includes
downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and home
of cutter races.
Winter begins in mid-November
with some snow already in the higher mountains and average snow depth is
three feet. Temperatures throughout the year
average lows of 50's at night, (some 32
degree
nights) in the 80s during the day (with occasional highs of 95), during
the summer, spring ranges from 32 degree to 60 degrees, winter from 0 to 40 from
nighttime to daytime. Some sever cold temperatures can drop to -30 degrees for a
short time. Public services include
three airstrips, (two asphalt 5200' & 5900'), 17 fire trucks and equipment
with 80 trained fireman, 6 ambulances with 80 trained EMTs, a 40,000 book
library, 15 bed hospital (currently under expansion), 24 bed care center,
a new high school, Jr. high school, four elementary schools and a
community college division of the University of Wyoming.
Two nearby commercial airports provide daily flight
service from Delta, American, Sky West, and Horizon airlines, commuter
connections to Salt Lake City International Airport. Continental Express,
United Express, UPS and Fed EX carriers provide overnight service to the
