It is currently a 15-bed facility with expansion beginning in summer 2002 that will double that capacity and increase and improve other services. Six physicians provide family care through the SVMC and an increasing staff of specialists, both in-house and visiting, provide a wide range of specialized medical care. In 1997 the 24-bed Star Valley Care Center was opened in Afton as a long-term care facility. An assisted living facility, Legacy Homes, is just north of Thayne on Muddy String Road. Highways: US Highway 89 is the main thoroughfare through Star Valley. US Highway 26, running east-west, joins US Highway 89 at Alpine Junction, 19 miles north of Thayne. The Snake River Canyon Highway, where Highways 26 & 89 run together, has been under re-construction since 1996. This 23-mile project between Alpine Junction and Hoback Junction should be completed in 2003. Nearest interstate, I-15, is 90 miles west. I-80 is 138 miles to the south. Bus service, etc: Local for senior citizens and handicapped. Greyhound Bus Lines in Idaho Falls & Pocatello, each about 95 miles from Thayne. Nearest Amtrak service is in Salt Lake City.
